Happy New Year everyone!  Each January 1st many individuals make new year’s resolutions. The #1 resolution made every year involves weight loss and exercise.  We have all found that any resolution is easier to stick with if there is someone else to help keep you motivated. This year why not make your pet your weight loss and exercise buddy?  It is estimated that 51% of the pets in the United states are overweight. As veterinarians we often harp on body condition and weight loss to help your pets remain healthier. Overweight animals are more at risk for joint and bone problems, diabetes, heart disease, high blood pressure, and other metabolic issues.

Daily Caloric Needs for Average Indoor Pets

Cats
10 lbs. 180 to 200 calories
Dogs
10 lbs. 200 to 275 calories
20 lbs. 325 to 400 calories
50 lbs. 700 to 900 calories

Pets daily caloric needs are based on weight.  Most foods have suggested feeding guidelines on the bag.
